Given the current assault on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives in the United States, it was a privilege to bear witness to Akron Fire Department’s progress in this regard. Major props to Chief Henderson and the women and men under his command for the outstanding work they do.

After several high-profile incidents of police violence toward Black Akronites last year, this story was about an upcoming policing forum led Black law enforcement officers from around Northeast Ohio. It was convened by Akron Police Department’s chaplain, who also serves as a local pastor.

In the days after President Trump took office, I reported on the impact of an executive order banning refugee entry to the US on the refugees who were due to arrive in Akron within weeks.
