I hail from sunny South Africa so have just been surviving Boston winters with my journalist / minister partner for the past eight years! My professional interest and passion centers on enabling people to gain access and information — being empowered. In web design, therefore, my focus is on usability, accessibility, and information architecture. As a social critic and advocate, I enjoy discussions about the impact of technology and information in light of social factors such as class and gender.
I have a Bachelor's degree from Simmons College in Sociology with a focus on Transnational Studies, Gender Studies, and Web Design, and am currently reading for a Master of Divinity degree at Andover Newton Theological School. My background is in theater — acting, directing, and coaching — and all the odd jobs that go with that career choice!
I have a curious mix of passions for all things artistic as well as all things organized. I am fascinated with how humans construct reality out of systems and by ascribing meaning.
My web design skills developed out of my curiosity and entrepreneurial spirit — I got a taste of content management and wanted to know what made the web tick. This compulsion has been consolidated in the past six years through classes, independent study, and on–the–job experience.
In designing for the web, I place value on
- Wholistic user interface design from strategy definition through wireframing and design mock–ups to coding.
- Semantic hand–coding, xhtml and css, using web standards and best practice for accessibility.
- Information architecture that enables usability (puts you, the user, first!)
